Hopping on, to 1 Timothy 2
Scripture-
1 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people,2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior,4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.Observations-
Who- Paul To Timothy
Why- Prayer is important because God wants all men to be saved and come to knowledge of the truth.
How do we see God- The whole chapter has God as the underlying point. It is because of Christ that the chapter is being written.
When- during the early church when Nero was emperor and there was persecution of the church.
Application-
Prayer should be made for everyone. Am I praying for others or am I mainly praying for myself? Is my prayer life really reflecting this? Why not? When did I become more of a focus then God’s desire for others? I should be praying for others because Jesus is the only way to God. Why don’t I have a passion for people that drives me to pray for them.
It seams to me that we have missed something. We don’t pray for those responsible for causing us harm. Paul is saying to Timothy that he should pray for those in power who were ultimately responsible for persecution in the early church. Why is this not present in the majority of american christianity today?
Prayer- That God would give me a heart for people. That I would care enough to pray for them even when they hurt me in some way. That my prayer for others would not be dependent on who they are but on the fact that they exist which makes them valuable enough to invest time in prayer for them.
